University Of Pretoria Engineering
Technological innovation and its management and application are essential for the creation of prosperity in any country. The Engineering School of the University of Pretoria gives students the education to make a considerable contribution in this field.Through it’s innovative and relevant research across seven departments, the school of Engineering at the University of Pretoria provides it’s Students with the necessary training to make a considerable contribution to engineering in South Africa and abroad. Below are the cutting-edge departments in the school:
Industrial and Systems Engineering
EBIT’s Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering works towards the integration of contributions from all engineering disciplines into a functional and cost effective product by using systems knowledge and understanding. It focuses on supply chain management, enterprise engineering and optimisation and collaborates with the centre for Transport Development.
Industrial engineering is an extensive field of study since it consists of many diverse scientific disciplines with interfaces to various fields of study, from the sciences to engineering and management. It is able to integrate the contributions of all the other engineering disciplines into a final, functional and marketable product, at the lowest possible cost.
Chemical Engineering
It is the aim of the Department to produce graduates who are capable of making a contribution to the growth of the country, who are well-equipped to apply their understanding of chemical engineering principles to the many challenges and opportunities locally, but who can also make significant contributions in the international arena. Our accredited undergraduate program is recognised internationally by the co-signatories of the Washington Accord. About 100 students graduate annually with a BEng-degree in Chemical Engineering. This qualification is fully accredited by ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa) enabling registration of graduates as Candidate Engineer and after the required exposure to industry, for application to register as Pr.Eng.
We believe that specialisation can only follow on a sound foundation – that is why our undergraduate curriculum ensures that this requirement is met. Our focus groups are mutually supportive, address the cutting-edge research questions of the day and put a strong focus on issues related to energy, biotechnology and the environment. At postgraduate level, our department specialises
Undergraduate Studies
The Chemical Engineering Department aims to provide a sound foundation for undergraduate students. The profession requires a careful study of both chemistry and engineering to lead innovation across crucial business sectors. Chemical engineers work with both inanimate objects and plants to help create more useful tools to expand and improve society.
The Department offers a unique environment wherein postgraduate students join a research community with notable researchers who have profound expertise in various thematic research areas such as Sustainable Environment and Water Utilisation; Sustainable and Efficient Energy Processes, and Process Modelling, Control, and Optimisation.
Research, Innovation and Facilities
Innovation, in particular technological innovation, is assumed to drive improvement in socio-economic growth of a nation. Therefore, thematic research foci in the department harness the strong research activities existing in the Department for knowledge creation and human capacity development.
Research groups within the Department work to address cutting-edge research activities. Over the years, the number of postgraduate students has significantly increased thus contributing to academic research on a global perspective and diverse collaboration.
Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering
Why EECE
Our signature courses encompass practically every aspect of the technologies that drive our modern world. We prepare our students to maintain and develop technologies in this ever-changing environment.
Our undergraduate students will learn to apply problem-solving skills related to electrical, electronic and computer engineering on an advanced level to make a meaningful contribution to industry.Undergraduate studies
Postgraduate studies
The Department strives for research excellence in line with world-wide trends and the priorities of the SDGs. Postgraduate students can pursue honours, master’s and doctoral degree programmes.
Laboratories
The Department houses world-class laboratory facilities for use by its students and researchers. These provide a platform for innovation in the pursuit of meaningful solutions to the most pressing challenges.
Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering
The Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology at the University of Pretoria is a leading and dynamic faculty that is one of the foremost providers of high-level intellectual capital and research in the country. The Faculty is renowned for its unique approach to innovation, its international status and links with industry.
The Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering is one of 14 departments in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology, and is the largest Department of Mechanical Engineering in South Africa. Its graduate and postgraduate students are trained to become top-quality engineers, owing to the Department’s internationally accepted programmes.
Its excellent world-class academic staff, most capable support staff members and facilities that include sophisticated experimental and computer laboratories have enabled the Department to establish various internationally renowned centres of excellence. Facilities include the following:
- A unique laboratory for structural mechanics, which is one of a very small number worldwide
- A superbly equipped vibration and controls laboratory
- Various wind tunnels and engine test facilities
- An excellent heat transfer laboratory
- Excellent workshops.
Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering
The Department is currently the only fully integrated metallurgical engineering department at tertiary level in South Africa. It exposes future professional metallurgical engineers to the full scope of the minerals/ metals discipline, ranging from minerals processing, through pyro- and hydroextractive metallurgy, to physical metallurgy, and welding and corrosion metallurgy. It prepares graduates for industry collaboration between all the sectors of the minerals- and metals-related disciplines.Degree programmes:
• BEng (Metallurgical Engineering)
• BEngHons with specialisation in metallurgical or welding engineering
• BScHons Applied Science with specialisation in metallurgy or welding technology
• MEng Metallurgical Engineering
• MSc Applied Science Metallurgy
• PhD Metallurgical Engineering
• PhD Metallurgy
Mining Engineering
WHY MINING ENGINEERING
Africa has the largest minerals industry in the world. The transactional value of foreign investment into Africa’s mining sector amounted to some $47 billion in 2018. Become part of the industry ‒ choose UP! Watch video on the link below
UP MINING FOOTPRINT
The University of Pretoria encourages impactful cross-disciplinary research. Because the mining industry impacts society on all levels, it is a sector in which cross-disciplinary research can yield meaningful results. #UPMiningMatters
UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES
Undergraduate BEng Mining Engineering students will learn to apply problem-solving skills related to mining engineering on an advanced level, while applying specialist and fundamental knowledge related to mining engineering
POSTGRADUATE STUDIESThe Department of Mining Engineering strives for research excellence in the mining industry. Postgraduate students can pursue honours, master’s and doctoral degree programmes in mining engineering and applied science mining.
Civil Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering has established a reputation for both the training of engineers and the advancement of the state of knowledge via research, thus contributing to the development and maintenance of civil infrastructure within and outside South Africa. Graduates of the Department are sought after globally and many are working well beyond our borders.
The UP Civil Engineering Department has produced about 40% of all civil engineers in South Africa over the past 50 years. Many of these engineers have made major contributions to the development and wealth creation in South Africa over these years. We are proud of this history and are building on these achievements of the past with a new vision and strategic direction for the future.
The BEng degree course is structured to fully meet and even exceed the requirements of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) which is the stepping stone for registration as a professional engineer. Consequently, a BEng (Civil) degree from the University of Pretoria is a recognised qualification for working as an engineer well beyond the borders of South Africa.
The departmental staff are research active in all disciplines of civil engineering and hence, the Department offers postgraduate courses in the fields of Geotechnical Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Railway Engineering and Civil Engineering Materials. Currently, the Department has 200 students enrolled in BEng(Hons), MEng and PhD courses, many of whom are nationals from neighbouring Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries and further afield.
From 2019, tuition is presented in English only.
