The Onderstepoort Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Onderstepoort was formerly known as the Blood Typing Laboratory and changed to DNA typing in 2001. The laboratory is a service-driven and self-funding unit and is run on current and general business principles. It fulfils various roles including an academic support role for postgraduate students interested in applied veterinary genetics, research of genetic diseases in various animals and development of tests and protocols that can be applied in the service division.

The service division consists mainly of a DNA profiling and parentage testing component, forensic DNA testing in animals, testing of specific genetic diseases and traits in animals, genotyping for population analysis and some pathogen testing of equines via the laboratories association with the Equine Research Centre.

The Onderstepoort Paraveterinary and Veterinary Student Committee (OPVSC) functions as the student representative council of the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Veterinary Science in Onderstepoort, Pretoria.

The committee handles all student-related matters on campus such as academic matters, social events and sports to name a few. We strive to act as the voice of the student body and have direct contact with the staff and management of the Faculty. Our aim is to improve communication between the students and the Faculty of Veterinary Science.

As students, we have the best interest of our students at heart and strive to make their wants and needs to be known.

We see ourselves as a committee that the students can continually rely on for faculty information and strive to lead selflessly and to make an impact in the lives of those around us.

The pinnacle achievement at the end of our term would be to inspire students to follow in our footsteps and serve their fellow students.
