University Of Pretoria Theology
We facilitate life-affirming values by seeking to teach theologies that are constructive, critical, relevant, contextual, and engaging. By studying at UP’s Faculty of Theology and Religion, you will undertake quality, collaborative, inter-disciplinary, and trans-disciplinary research. We will create a space for differing epistemologies, inter-religious dialogue, and new technologies so you can engage in the critical reading of texts from religious, historical, and life experiences.
Our main mission is to nurture transformative leaders that serve the academia, faith-communities, and society as a whole by promoting justice, peace, integrity and ultimately reconciling diversity in order to let human life flourish in Africa.
Admission Requirements
- Relevant bachelor’s degree and a relevant Teacher’s Diploma (e.g. BA + HED) or relevant bachelor’s degree and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or relevant four-year bachelor’s degree in Education (e.g. BEd) or relevant M+4 Teacher’s Diploma and relevant Advanced Diploma in Education.

Theological research at UP: Anchored in Africa, reaching into the world
The Faculty of Theology has engaged in interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research on a wide spectrum of strategic academic and societal interests ranging from social cohesion, social ethics, and leadership, missional church to narrative pastoral care and to actual biblical-hermeneutical challenges to the influential science-theology discourses. Much of the research has as focus on the problem of poverty, the challenges of reconciliation, and the need for restorative justice, involving key role players in different sectors of society, industry, and academia.
The latest metrics and rankings of the QS ranking system (8 March 2017) categorize the Faculty in their new category of ‘Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies’ UP a position between 51-100 in the world. According to the QS webpage, Pretoria rates #28 in the world with respect to citations per paper and #14 in the world with respect to H-Index citations. This puts UP first in Africa and significantly higher than many renowned institutions in Europe, the UK, and the USA.
It is undisputed that UP has in most respects the leading Faculty, nationally and in Africa. Internationally the Faculty is respected, influential, and competitive.
Meet the people behind Theology’s postgraduate research
The Faculty of Theology and Religion has exceeded in 2016 almost all its goals regarding research and internationalization. The highest number of Ph.D. degrees in the Faculty has been awarded (34). In 2018 all permanent staff members will have doctoral degrees. In addition, academic personnel is continuously motivated to apply for NRF-ratings in order to heighten impact and to maintain publication outputs.
The highest number of subsidized article units (202) has been published in 2016, and books, chapters in books, and conference proceedings have increased to 32.
